Deal activity by volume related to AI decreased by 2% year-on-year in 2023 in the consumer industry

Analysis of the key themes driving deal activity reveals that AI accounted for 412 consumer deals between 2019 and 2023, worth a total value of $37.2bn, according to GlobalData’s Deals database covering mergers and acquisitions, private equity, venture financing, equity offerings and partnerships.  

The $14bn private equity investment in Toshiba by Japan Industrial Partners was the largest disclosed deal in 2023, while the $1.2bn acquisition of Poshmark by Naver was the largest disclosed deal in 2022.  

In volume terms, AI related deal activity decreased by 2% year-on-year in 2023 and increased by 72% year-on-year in 2022.

Venture Financing accounted for the highest number of deals in the last five years, with 259 deals, followed by Acquisition (64 deals), Partnership (36), Equity Offering (33 deals), Private Equity (8 deals), and Asset Transaction and Merger with 6 deals each.
